As many know, the Alumni Gardens are a well-loved part of the Agricultural Campus, used regularly by students, staff, community members, and 鈥� as the name suggests 鈥� alumni.

When the Class of 1964 gathered for their 60th reunion in the fall of 2024, they decided they wished to commemorate the occasion by presenting a gift to campus that could be enjoyed by all. A contribution to the Alumni Gardens seemed the obvious choice.聽

鈥淚鈥檓 lucky to visit the Alumni Gardens regularly, and had noticed there wasn鈥檛 a comfortable place for a larger group to sit and have coffee together,鈥� said Dwight Higgins, who led planning for the class reunion. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 where the idea began.鈥�

Spearheaded by Dwight, the class decided on a square picnic table that could seat up to 12 people. The table was constructed over the winter and installed in early June, just in time for the busiest season in the gardens.听听

鈥淚t鈥檚 rare to be in the Alumni Gardens in the summer and not see members of the community enjoying the space,鈥� said Jordan Leurdijk, outdoor classroom and landscape manager. 鈥淭he Botanical Garden Unit is very proud of the gardens and works hard to keep them looking great for the community to enjoy for weddings, grad photos, picnics, events, or simply visiting friends and family. We greatly appreciate gifts provided to the gardens by alumni.鈥�

As a local resident as well as a campus retiree, Dwight knows how well used the Alumni Gardens are, and is pleased that his class came together to contribute to their enhancement.

鈥淭he feedback about the picnic table has been great,鈥� said Dwight. 鈥淚鈥檓 happy with the outcome and pleased that my classmates were enthusiastic about supporting the project.聽I would love to see further additions to the space, perhaps in the form of shade over the table.鈥�
