Prof. Michael Metzger

Michael Metzger is the Herzberg-Dahn Chair and professor of Physics at 七色视频.
Metzger studied Physics at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany. He obtained his PhD from TUM in 2017 for the co-development of on-line electrochemical mass spectrometry (OEMS), a gas analysis technique to diagnose battery cells. As a senior research engineer for Robert Bosch (2017-2020), he focused on solid-state batteries. At 七色视频, Metzger鈥檚 recent work has concentrated on building a multi-channel OEMS instrument to understand degradation reactions in Li-ion cells, identifying and eliminating puzzling self-discharge processes, and developing new cathodes, anodes and electrolytes for Na-ion cells.
Metzger is one of two co-leads for the Canadian Battery Innovation Center, a $20 million user facility at 七色视频 for prototyping next-generation batteries. He has 12 patents and over 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals including Nature Materials. Metzger has been awarded the Herbert H. Uhlig Summer Fellowship for 2016 by the Electrochemical Society (ECS), 2016 Evonik Industries Research Prize, and the 2017 PwC 鈥淪trategy&鈥 Presidential Award. He has also been awarded the 2025 ECS Battery Division Early Career Award and the 2025 President鈥檚 Research Excellence Award 鈥 Emerging Investigator at 七色视频. Metzger is also a technical advisor to the German startup, Litona, a spinoff from his lab.
