Students in our CIP-recognized programs are聽required聽to have experience in professional practice as part of their academic studies. All students in the Master of Planning Program must complete a聽Co-op Work Term with minimum 500 hours of employment. This typically occurs in the summer semester between the first and second academic years. Most employments start later in April or the beginning of May.

Co-op placements are often in:

• Government planning offices
• Consulting firms
• Development companies
• Research centres
• NGOs

Students may find work placements in Canada or abroad,聽and indeed may need to look outside the Halifax Regional Municipality.

These programs afford opportunity to gain work experience and reflect upon the relationship between theory and practice.

Students are assisted by our Co-op program director in their search for appropriate work placements, but are ultimately responsible for securing an employment or volunteer opportunity that the School may approve. Although the Faculty and the School can help students find placements, the greatest success comes for students who begin the job search early, with a clear idea of what they hope to achieve from the work term.
